Summary

This article provides information regarding compatibility of Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software running on a Novell platform.

Novell and Multi-User Software

The current versions of Tabs3 and PracticeMaster multi-user software (Versions 15, 14, 12, and 11) have been tested and are currently supported for Novell networks running under NetWare 6.5.

Starting with Version 16, Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software will no longer be tested on Novell networks. Novell users will, however, receive a basic level of support from our Technical Support department. This support can include guidance on how the software works, and how to use Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software. This limited support for Novell users will not include troubleshooting issues that may have been caused by Novell networks.

Vista Note: Known locking issues exist with the Novell NetWare Client for Microsoft Vista (all versions including Novell Client 2.0). Therefore, we recommend NOT using the Novell NetWare Client for Vista workstations with Version 15. Instead, we recommend installing Novell Native File Access on the server and have Vista workstations connect using the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol over TCP/IP instead of via the Novell Client for Windows Vista. Information regarding Novell Native File Access can be found on Novell's Web site.

Additional information can be found in R11238 - How Windows 7 and Vista Affect Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software.

Novell Open Enterprise Server

Novell has announced that NetWare 6.5 will be the last stand-alone NetWare Operating System (OS). All future Novell server products will be openSUSE Linux-based as part of the Open Enterprise Server. Although the Open Enterprise Server has not been tested, most likely standard multi-user versions of Tabs3 and PracticeMaster programs should be able to be stored on the Linux server and run across the Novell network, but will not run on the server itself. However, we recommend that our software is run on systems listed in our System Requirements.

Client/Server versions (CSV) of the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster programs will not run successfully on a Linux server, because the required STI Server cannot be run on a Linux server.

As of this writing (December 2011), the current Novell Open Enterprise Server includes SUSE Linux Enterprise 11. NetWare is not included, and general support ended March 2010, with extended support ending in March 2012. The current version of Open Enterprise Server 2 is Service Pack 3 (SP3). For more information about Open Enterprise Server and migrating to openSUSE from NetWare, see Novell's Web site for Open Enterprise Server.

Novell and Client Server Version (CSV) Products

There are separate versions of STI Server for Windows and Novell platforms. Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Version 15 and prior are supported for Novell NetWare Version 6.5 (i.e., a Novell Server running a version of NetWare supported by Novell, using TCP/IP protocol). No future versions of Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software will be designed or tested for use on a Novell server; however, support for prior versions will continue.

The following CSV features are not compatible with Novell NetWare:

If the server's operating system will be changing from Novell to Windows, a different version of the STI Server is required. Please contact our Sales Department at (402) 419-2200 to receive a new version of the software. There is no charge for switching from Novell to Windows for users on maintenance.

Note: STI Server cannot be run under a Linux server, and therefore cannot be run on the openSUSE version of Novell Open Enterprise Server.
