Information for Version 16 software is available in KB Article R11434 - User Rights Needed to Install and Use Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software.
This article discusses what computer system user rights are needed in order to install and use Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software as well as the issues that arise if you do not have certain rights. Information regarding rights required in Windows Vista can be found in KB Article R11238, "How Windows 7 and Vista Affect Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software."
The following table illustrates the level and type of rights required for certain functions.

The following scenarios describe the results of performing the functions listed in the table above without having the specified rights.
This section includes details regarding XP and Vista Operating Systems and the installation of Tabs3 and PracticeMaster programs.
Attempting to install Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software from the CD or run SETUP.EXE from the program folder on the server at a Windows XP workstation requires administrator rights to the workstation. If you do not have sufficient rights, the installation will abort with the message "Error Extracting Support Files - Access Denied". KB Article R10705, "Issues Running Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software Under Windows XP," has additional information about this error. Installing the software also requires full rights to the folder into which the software is being installed. If you do not have full rights to this folder, the installation may abort since it cannot create new files in the target folder or copy files to the target folder.
Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Version 15 programs have included an automatic elevation feature that is designed to eliminate many of the issues associated with having insufficient rights to directories. During the Auto Update process, if it is determined that the user does not have sufficient rights to the necessary directories, a window similar to the following will be displayed, allowing the user to sign in with Administrative credentials.

Tabs3 and PracticeMaster will run under Windows 7 or Windows Vista SP1. Numerous changes were made to the software to make it easier to run the software as a non-administrator. When running as a Windows 7 or Vista stand-alone system or as a Windows 7 or Vista workstation that connects to a Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2003/2000 (either 32-bit or 64-bit) or Windows XP Professional, all functions can be run with UAC enabled. However, when running in a network environment on a server that is running under Windows 7 or Vista with UAC enabled, our testing has shown that you may experience intermittent connection reliability issues. Although Windows 7 and Vista SP1 significantly reduced the number of these issues, our testing did encounter connection issues with UAC enabled on the server.
Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Version 15 will elevate the user to an Administrator when executing the Local Install on the workstation, and any other time where the user needs to have Administrator privileges in order to complete the desired task. The window displayed will depend on if the user is a member of the Administrators group on the workstation. If the user is a member of the Administrators group, the following window will be displayed:

If the user is not a member of the Administrators group, the following Window will be displayed:

Note: If running the software under Windows 7 or Vista as a standard user with UAC disabled, the software cannot elevate the user to Administrator and therefore cannot perform the installation.
Using any Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software requires full rights to the folders in which the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software is installed and any folders in which the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software stores data. This is because certain functions in the software may create, copy, rename, modify and/or delete existing files. If you do not have sufficient rights, there are a variety of fatal errors and other issues that may occur as a result.
Certain settings are written to the Windows registry for a few PracticeMaster features. Therefore, in order to successfully install these PracticeMaster features, they must be installed by a user who has administrator credentials. If you are running the software without these credentials, you will be asked to enter them at the time they are required. These features include:
Once the Windows registry has been appropriately modified when an administrator starts or installs the feature, it is no longer necessary for the user to have Administrator rights.
