Summary

This article discusses how to uninstall (remove) Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Version 15 software.

Uninstalling the Program Files

Version 15 of the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software includes an uninstall program.

Note: If you want to uninstall the software from the server, run the uninstall at the server, not from a workstation. Running the uninstall from the workstation and pointing to the server location will not remove all of the necessary files.

To uninstall the software

  1. From the Windows Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs. (Note: If using Windows Vista, in the Control Panel select Programs and Features.)
  2. Select Tabs3/PracticeMaster Programs or Tabs3/PracticeMaster Local Installation, whichever is present.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

            ...or...

  1. From the Start menu, point to Programs | Tabs3 and PracticeMaster | Uninstall.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.  (Note: When using this method, the program group will not be removed from the Start menu automatically.)

Before any programs are uninstalled, you will be presented with a window similar to the following:

Select Products to Uninstall Screenshot

This window will list all currently installed Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software programs, allowing you to choose which programs you want to uninstall. (Note: A selected check box indicates that the program will be uninstalled.)

Note: The built-in uninstall program does not delete the data files; this is by design. You can manually delete the data files after uninstalling the programs as discussed in the following section.

Removing Data Files

Data files are located in the program folder specified when the software was installed. The Local Installation directory will not contain Data files; it will only contain Program files and Documentation (including manuals, multimedia tutorials, and Help files).

Removing Data Files for All Products

If you are removing ALL Tabs3 and PracticeMaster applications from your computer, you can simply run the uninstall program and then delete the entire program folder.

Removing Data Files for a Single Product

If you only need to remove the data files for certain Tabs3 and PracticeMaster programs and want to leave other data files, use one of the following procedures. The procedures vary depending on whether the program files have already been uninstalled or not.

To remove data files for an individual program if the program is still installed

  1. Open one of the programs you want to remove.
  2. From the Help menu, click About. Write down the Current Working Directory shown in this window.
  3. Close the program.
  4. If you will be removing Tabs3 General Ledger Software (GLS), open GLS. Otherwise, skip to step #7.
  5. From the Reports menu, select GLS Client List and print a GLS Client List.
  6. Close GLS.
  7. Open Windows Explorer (right-click the Windows Start button and select Explore).
  8. Navigate to the directory where the Version 15 programs are installed (written down in Step #2).
  9. Right-click the appropriate data files and select Delete. The following table will assist you in identifying which data files can be deleted for each program.
  10. If you are removing GLS, you will also need to delete the GLS data files in all directories specified for the GLS Data Path on the GLS Client List that was printed in step #5. One at a time, right-click the data files in each directory and select Delete.

To remove data files for an individual program if the program has been uninstalled

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Search. (Note: If using Windows Vista, open Windows Explorer.)
  2. Change the Look In field to search the desired drive letter. By default, the Look In field is set to search the Start Menu folder when accessed this way. (Note: If using Windows Vista, navigate to the desired drive letter.)
  3. Locate STUSER.DAT. The folder containing this file is the folder where the software was installed. (Note: If using Windows Vista, enter STUSER.DAT in the Search field.)
  4. Right-click the appropriate data files and select Delete. The following table will assist you in identifying which data files can be deleted for each program.

Note: Although the majority of data files for each software program are included in the following table, there may be a few files that are not listed in the following table. A comprehensive list of these files can be found in KB Article R11237, "Version 15 Data File Names".

Removing STI Server

If reverting from Version 15 CSV Tabs3 and PracticeMaster to the standard software, refer to the KB article R11254 - Changing from Client Server Version (CSV) Software to Multi-User Software.

Note: STI Server program files are removed if you uninstall System Configuration. The following is a complete list of files that are removed when the Version 15 CSV software is uninstalled. Certain features are not installed when running Novell NetWare, and are therefore not uninstalled, including the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Accelerators, HotBackup executables, and the STI Director. (Note: If uninstalling a backup installation of the CSV software, do not select to uninstall System Configuration. Only one installation of STI Server software is installed on the server. Therefore, uninstalling System Configuration from the backup installation will remove the STI Director and all CSV settings for the main CSV installation.)

Removing STI Director Service

Use the following steps to uninstall the STI Director Service if UnInst.exe is not used to remove your program files:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, select or enter Run, and enter CMD to open a command prompt.
  2. Change the directory to the local Windows directory (e.g., C:\Windows).
  3. Type "ctntinst -stop STI Director Service" to Stop the service.
  4. Type "STDIRECT -U" to Uninstall the service.

Note: When the uninstall is complete, the STI Director Service will be stopped and uninstalled from the Windows directory. If uninstalling and reinstalling for troubleshooting purposes, enter "STDIRECT -I" to reinstall the STI Director Service. The service will then need to be restarted via the Services window, or by typing "ctntinst -start STI Director Service" in the command prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are program icons removed from my desktop when I uninstall the software?
Yes, the icons are removed automatically.

What is the difference between running the uninstall program on a workstation versus on the server?
The software installed on the server may not have originally been installed at the server (i.e., it may have been installed from a workstation). Therefore, the uninstall program functions differently based on whether or not the software was originally installed on the same computer from which you run the uninstall program.

The entry in the Add or Remove Programs dialog indicates whether or not the program was originally installed from your workstation. If the entry reads "Tabs3/PracticeMaster Programs", it means the software was installed to the server from your workstation. If the entry reads "Tabs3/PracticeMaster Local Installation", it means the workstation setup program (SETUP.EXE) was run on your workstation, but the software was originally installed to the server from another computer.

When the uninstall program is run on the computer that was used to install the software originally, the following occurs:

When the uninstall program is run on a workstation that originally used SETUP.EXE in the program folder to create a local installation, only the following occurs:

Do I need to make changes to the registry after uninstalling?
No. The uninstall program prompts you for all registry-related changes and makes the adjustments automatically based on your responses.

Do I need to uninstall the Palm Conduits separately?
No. The uninstall program will ask whether or not you want the Palm Conduits uninstalled and remove them automatically if you choose Yes.

Can I delete the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster program folder rather than running the uninstall program?
Although you can, this method is not recommended. The uninstall program removes various registry entries, files, icons and program groups that would not be removed by simply deleting the folder containing the program files. If you delete the program folder without running the uninstall program, the following items will remain on the computer:
