Summary

This article discusses Windows disk space quotas and the potential issues associated with using disk quotas with Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software.

More Information

The term "Disk quotas" refers to a feature included in NTFS file systems, such as Windows 7, Server 2008, Vista, Server 2003, and Windows XP operating systems. Disk quotas allow system administrators to monitor and control how much disk space each network user can use on a given volume (i.e., on a hard disk or a partition of a hard disk). Using disk quotas, administrators can cause a warning to occur when a user approaches a pre-determined limit of disk space in use. Users can optionally be prevented from performing any action that would cause them to exceed their quota of disk space. When disk quotas are enabled and users' disk space is limited on the volume containing the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software, errors can occur as a result, just as if the disk were out of space.

Errors Caused by Disk Quotas

The following are examples of fatal errors that can result from having disk quotas enabled on the volume containing the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster program folder:

Errors such as these can occur when a user's disk space is limited and the program attempts to perform an operation that would cause the user to exceed his or her specified limit. Both of the errors listed above contain the operating system error code 112, which indicates "There is not enough space on the disk". Although this error code will appear if there is legitimately not enough space on the disk, it is also possible for this error to be caused by disk quotas. For example, suppose a user is limited to 500 megabytes (MB) of space on the disk, and making a backup of the data in Tabs3 requires 100 MB of space. If the user already has more than 400 MB of space in use on the disk, the backup will abort with a message indicating that there is not enough disk space.

How To Determine Whether Disk Quotas are Enabled

To Determine Whether Disk Quotas are Enabled on a Volume

Note:  If you are not a member of the Administrators group, you will not be able to see disk quota information.

  1. From the Windows desktop, select Start | Computer (or My Computer if running Windows XP).
  2. Right-click the volume that you want to check for disk quotas, and select Properties.
  3. On the Quota tab, determine whether the Enable quota management check box is selected. If this check box is selected, disk quotas are enabled for this volume. If this check box is cleared, disk quotas are not enabled.
  4. If disk quotas are enabled on the volume containing the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster program folder, you may want to disable disk quotas to prevent possible fatal errors and other problems. To disable disk quotas, clear the Enable quota management check box and click OK. Alternatively, if you want to be able to keep track of user disk usage, leave that check box selected and simply clear the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit check box. Disk quotas themselves do not necessarily cause problems with Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software, but rather, it is when the program cannot access the needed disk space that problems will occur.
