Information for Version 15 software is available in KB Article R11258 - User Rights Needed to Install and Use Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software.
This article discusses what computer system user rights are needed in order to install and use Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software as well as the issues that arise if you do not have certain rights. Information regarding rights required in Windows Vista can be found in KB Article R11150, "How Windows 7 and Vista Affect Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software (Version 14.3 and Prior)."
The following table illustrates the level and type of rights required for certain functions.

The following scenarios describe the results of performing the functions listed in the table above without having the specified rights.
Attempting to install Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software from the CD-ROM or run SETUP.EXE from the program folder on the server at a Windows XP/2000/NT4 workstation, requires administrator rights to the workstation. If you do not have sufficient rights, the installation will abort with the message "Error Extracting Support Files - Access Denied". KB Article R10705, Issues Running Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software Under Windows XP/2000, has additional information about this error.
Installing the software also requires full rights to the folder into which the software is being installed. If you do not have full rights to this folder, the installation may abort since it cannot create new files in the target folder or copy files to the target folder.
Using any Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software requires full rights to the folders in which the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software is installed and any folders in which the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software stores data. This is because certain functions in the software may create, copy, rename, modify and/or delete existing files. If you do not have sufficient rights, there are a variety of fatal errors and other issues that may occur as a result.
Using the software also requires that you have rights to create and modify files in the Windows folder on the workstation (i.e., the folder in which the workstation's operating system is installed). The software uses a configuration settings file called STI.INI, which stores information such as printer margins and settings, the last printer used in Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software, the last client used, certain preferences, etc. Each time a change is made to one of the settings in the STI.INI file, the file is updated automatically. (Note: Certain settings are not saved until the software is closed). If the STI.INI file does not exist in the Windows folder when a Tabs3 and PracticeMaster application is started, the application creates the file. If you do not have sufficient rights to create or modify files in the Windows folder, certain important settings will not be saved. For detailed information on the STI.INI file, including the location it will be found in, see KB Article R10662 - Settings Stored in the STI.INI File and User Profile.
There are several PracticeMaster functions that must be run by an Administrator at least once on the workstation before the function can be used by other login users on that workstation. This is because there are certain settings that are written to the Windows registry for these PracticeMaster features. Therefore, in order to successfully use these PracticeMaster features, the feature must be started one time by a user who has Administrator privileges, Power User privileges, or privileges to edit registry settings.
These features include:
Once the Windows registry has been appropriately modified when an administrator starts or installs the feature, it is no longer necessary for the user to have these rights.
When earlier versions of PracticeMaster are started, PracticeMaster attempts to write to the workstation's registry. If you do not have rights to modify the registry, the message "Failed to update system registry, you must use regedit" is displayed. To prevent this message from appearing every time PracticeMaster is started on a Windows XP/2000/NT4 workstation, you must be provided with sufficient rights to edit the registry. As an alternative, update PracticeMaster to Version 12.2 or later.
