The REDRTEST.EXE program is a diagnostic tool that can be used to test for current redirector software on network workstations and most file servers. It also tests for our recommended Windows registry settings including Windows NT/2000/XP opportunistic locking settings and can be used to implement those registry settings if they need to be changed. This program will also optionally implement recommended settings for workstations using the Novell Client 32 Redirector.
Previously, we recommended running REDRTEST.EXE at every workstation. This is because one of the primary functions of REDRTEST.EXE was to check for non-current redirector software on Windows 95 platforms. When using Version 12 of our software, this is no longer necessary since our software no longer runs under the Windows 95 platform. If you are using Version 11 (or an earlier version) of our software and are still using Windows 95 workstations, you will want to run REDRTEST.EXE on any Windows 95 workstations.
Currently, the primary function of REDRTEST.EXE is to test for recommended opportunistic locking settings and implement those settings if they need to be changed.
It is recommended that REDRTEST.EXE be run:
The REDRTEST.EXE program can be run from any drive (local or network).
Note: Logging onto the network as an administrator before invoking the REDRTEST.EXE utility program is recommended so that edits can be made to the registry if necessary.
Novell Note: The REDRTEST.EXE program cannot be run on a Novell file server.
The REDRTEST.EXE program file is included on our software CD and is automatically installed when the System Configuration program is installed from our CD-ROM. However, you want to make sure you have the most current version of the REDRTEST.EXE utility program. If the REDRTEST.EXE file has a date earlier than 04/01/2003, you will want to download the most current version from the Internet.
The REDRTEST.EXE program file (164K) can be downloaded from the Internet at:
We recommend that REDRTEST.EXE be copied to and run from the Tabs3 program directory. To determine the program directory, open the Tabs3 software and select Help | About (e.g., Help | About Tabs3). The program directory information is located in the middle section of the About window.
To start the REDRTEST.EXE program from Windows:
To start the REDRTEST.EXE program from an MS DOS prompt:
Once the program has been started, a Redirector Test window will be displayed. Click the Test button to run the program. Information regarding Redirectors and Registry Settings will be shown, as well as the type of server being used.
Each installed redirector's version, file size and status will be shown.
Note: If on any computer, the REDRTEST indicates items that "NEED UPDATE","SHOULD BE CHANGED", or are "NOT SET PROPERLY", make sure to address the situation.
Complete details regarding how to update redirectors can be found in:
Note: If you update a redirector, restart the computer. Then, rerun REDRTEST.EXE program to confirm that it has been updated correctly.
Various registry settings will be shown depending on whether the program is run on a workstation or a Windows file server.
If any registry setting shows "SHOULD BE CHANGED", you can select the Change Registry Settings if Necessary check box and click the Test button to have the program automatically change the setting.
Note: It is important to note that if changes are made, the computer must be restarted in order for the changes to take effect. After restarting the computer, rerun the REDRTEST.EXE program to confirm that it has been updated correctly.
Complete details regarding recommended registry settings can be found in:
Note: Opportunistic Locking is enabled by default when Windows is installed. Furthermore, Opportunistic Locking is re-enabled whenever a Service Pack is applied to Windows XP/2000/NT.
A log file of results is maintained in a file named REDRTEST.LOG. This file is stored in the same location as the REDRTEST.EXE file. Information is appended to the log file each time REDRTEST.EXE is run, provided it is run using the same working directory as the program directory.
Typical and Conservative options are offered when using the Novell Client 32 Redirector. Some settings in the Conservative option may cause the software to run slower than the settings in the Typical option. Use the Conservative option if you experience problems using settings in the Typical option. Exact settings for the Typical and Conservative options can be found in KB Article R10200 - Redirector Problems and Other Network Problems.
